Available Aid Types

BIR provides a financial aid package, based on federal guidelines, using a combination of grants and low interest direct loans from the U.S. Department of Education. Aid is awarded in the same order as presented below.

Pell Grant 2011 - 2012 Academic Year

  • Does not have to be repaid
  • Based on financial need
  • Annual Award for the 2011-12 School Year $555 - $5,550

Federal Work Study

  • Does not have to be repaid
  • Part-time employment provides students with the opportunity to earn money and to improve working skills and habits.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant

  • Does not have to be repaid
  • Available to qualified students receiving Pell Grants
  • Limited grants, available on first come – first served basis
  • $120 – $720 per academic year
  • Students who enroll before FAFSA deadlines will be considered for FSEOG grants

Subsidized Direct Stafford Loan

  • Must be repaid
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • U.S. Department of Education pays interest while borrower is in school and during grace and deferment periods
  • Must be at least a halftime student
  • $3,500 first academic year

Unsubsidized Direct Stafford Loan

  • Must be repaid
  • Borrower is responsible for interest during life of the loan
  • Must be at least a halftime student
  • Financial need is not a requirement
  • $6,000 per academic year

PLUS Loan

  • Must be repaid
  • Available to parents of dependent students enrolled at least halftime
  • Acceptable credit history for parent
  • Maximum amount is cost of attendance minus any other
