Becoming a BIR Student from Abroad

These are the the general guidelines for becoming a BIR student if you are currently abroad. Please keep in mind that the path to BIR may vary due to individual circumstances. When you apply to study at BIR a counselor who is proficient in your native language will be assigned to you. Your counselor will guide you through the process of admission, answer your questions, and support you throughout your studies at BIR. All correspondence with the school should be addressed to:

  1. Application

    1. Fill out BIR’s application and send it to us by e-mail, fax, or mail or apply online. In addition to the application you must send BIR a copy of your passport, evidence of financial funds, and a copy of your college or high school diploma along with academic history/credentials form
    2. Pay a non-refundable International Student Fee ($250 payable to “BIR Training Center”) by cashier’s check, credit card, bank draft, or money order.
  2. Issuance of I-20

    1. BIR will review your application and request, if necessary, additional or missing information.
    2. The SEVIS I-901 $200 Processing Fee can be paid through the ICE website, to BIR, which will pay the fee and issue you a receipt, or in some countries at a US embassy/consulate.
    3. Once your application is accepted AND SEVIS fee paid, BIR will create an I-20 (initial entry form) and send it to you by mail.
  3. Visa Interview

    Your Initial Entry Visa Interview at a US embassy/consulate can take place up to 120 days before the program start date and requires the following documentation:
    • Your I-20
    • SEVIS I-901 receipt
    • Signed passport (must be valid for 6 months after entry into the US)
    • Transcripts or diplomas from current or previous institutions
    • Program of study description
    • Accommodation information (see Homestay Information)
    • Evidence of funds to cover tuition and living expenses for either the length of your study or one year, whichever is shorter.
    • Your local US embassy/consulate might require additional forms such as DS-156, DS-157A, DS-158A. They are available online or at your local embassy/consulate.
  4. Notify BIR

    When you are granted a US entrance visa, please notify BIR of your expected arrival date, and confirm housing and transportation arrangements. You should arrive no more than 30 days before your program start date.
  5. Enrollment

    1. You are required to arrive at BIR and enroll within 15 days of your admission to the United States.
    2. Pay enrollment fee, tuition, and security deposit. The security deposit is refunded upon completion of a program of study, if there are no outstanding balances.
    3. Attend language assessment. You will be placed in classes according to your level of English ability.
    4. Participate in orientation.
    5. Meet with the International Student Services department.
    6. Select your schedule and register for classes.
  6. Entering the United States

    1. You cannot enter the United States more than 30 days before the start of your program at BIR.
    2. Upon arrival at a United States Port of Entry you must present:
      • Your I-20 initial entry form
      • A valid visa containing your SEVIS identification number and the name of the school you will be attending (BIR).
      • Financial documentation
      • A valid passport
    3. You must contact BIR within 15 days of arriving in the US or your visa will be terminated.
